Among the world’s healthiest foods are figs. Traditionally native to the middle east and Mediterranean regions, the origins of figs can be traced as far back as the Bible. Today, they have consumed the world over for wellness, in both fresh and dry forms. Here’s why you should be eating them.

Benefits of figs

  • - Figs are one of the richest sources of soluble fiber. Not only does this ensure regular bowel movement and prevent constipation, but it also keeps you feeling full for longer periods and prevents binge eating.
  • - The nutritional profile of figs is truly staggering. They are mineral-rich, with calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and copper being found in abundance. As far as vitamins go, vitamin A, K and certain kinds of B vitamins are found in figs. All these can lower blood pressure and promote cardiovascular health, as well as bone and joint health, and allover cell health and immunity. They are also rich in amino acids.
  • - Figs contain ‘phenol’, a kind of antioxidant that can reduce the occurrence of various kinds of cancers. It also contains beta carotene and benzaldehyde, all of which are anti-cancer compounds.
  • - Mentioned in the Garden of Eden, these are the ultimate aphrodisiac, boosting libido and one’s sex drive naturally. The seeds of the fig are also good for fertility.

Dried or fresh figs?

The fresh figs are obviously better to consume, but because they are perishable, dry figs offer an alternative and make for a healthy and practical snack while on the go. Also, dried figs tend to be higher in natural sugars and high calorie as well; so while they’re nutritious, be mindful of this when you consume them.
